A Case Study: Cutting costs at InterPRO with Markforged


It is imperative for a successful company to constantly take stock of expenditures and reduce costs where ever feasible. With the Eiger software that comes included with a Markforged machine, there are many ways to tweak designs for maximum strength and minimum cost. With Markforged, reducing cost becomes second nature.

Here at InterPRO, we decided to do an experiment. Can we build a strong, solid part on the Mark Two with the minimum amount of material? We all know the comparison of the cost of plastic to the cost of a machined part but what about keeping the costs down with Markforged parts?


We began with our traditional InterPRO giveaway wrenches used to demonstrate the strength of carbon fiber parts. The wrenches were being built at 50% density, consisting of 10 layers of carbon fiber with 6 concentric rings. This part is extremely strong at these settings. At shows and demonstrations it is imperative for us to demonstrate the potential strength of the parts produced on this system. These wrenches were really tough, but they were just too expensive. At this configuration, each wrench was costing $4.00, which is a higher cost than we wanted for our giveaway part.


Then the experimenting began. We decided to lessen the density to 20% and only put 4 layers of carbon fiber with 2 concentric rings. This is less than half of the fiber filament we were putting in the other wrenches. The outcome was astonishing. This wrench was nearly identical to the others except one very import factor: it cut costs by more than half!


This giveaway wrench now costs InterPRO $1.85 to produce. This will help us produce these parts with the same structural integrity, for half the price. So, before you decide to jam pack your part with continuous fiber filament, try starting with a little bit and work your way up. See what the best ratio is for you and your part, and potentially save lots of money in the long run!
