Experiments in Parallelization – A Case Study of the Markforged Print Farm
It may not be the easiest word to pronounce, but “parallelization” is a concept that has become a frequent topic of discussion in the 3D printing industry. When speaking about the future of additive manufacturing, the team at Markforged believes it is closely connected to the use of many machines working together to print parts rapidly – in one word: “parallelization”.
The bold goal set forward by Greg Mark, CEO at Markforged is “unlocking printed metal production at scale within 2 years”. In today’s world, metal 3D printers are the mainframe computers of manufacturing. They are large, slow, and expensive ($500k -1M). In the same way, mainframes were disrupted by cloud data centers, large-format metal printers will be replaced by smaller, low-cost machines working in parallel – print-farms.
There are three key pillars that support MF’s vision for “true digital metal manufacturing”:
1. ADAM (ATOMIC DIFFUSION ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING)
An end-to-end process that fundamentally scales down in cost, built on existing reinforced extrusion technology.
2. 3D PRINT-FARM PLATFORM
High-precision, low cost, printer instances enabled through smart sensors.
3. FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Enterprise-grade software that can optimize workflows, provide predictive analytics, connect, monitor, and report results across a fleet of connected printers.
